Something odd is going on at Canadian Personal Finance the past few weeks, the Bots are attacking. It seems that MSN and Yahoo’s Bots have both taken a big liking to my site, and have been inundating the site with crawlers.

The past few days bot numbers are:

  • January 21  MSN:  1713  Yahoo: 478  Google: 148
  • January 20 MSN:  509 Yahoo:  484  Google:  498
  • January 19  MSN:  1230  Yahoo:  467  Google:  416

Those are some impressive and weird numbers, not sure why MSN is so hot to trot about the site, but I am not complaining either.

Number of readers is up as well, given I was averaging about 150 a day, now I am somewhere near 300, which is a very good thing. Page Rank is also back up to 3/10 so that is a start too.

An update on  my attempt to carve out a meager income with my blogging so here is an update for December from Canadian Personal Finance Opinions :

  • Adsense income $51.54 with about 5000 impressions
  • Kontera income $7.84  on 4400 page impressions
  • Text Link Ads income $38.09 earn with 5 ads running out of a possible 8 (text link ads)
  • Performancing Ads $15.60 from 1 advertiser
  • Pepper Jam Ads income $0.00
  • NeverBlueAds income $0.00
  • TTZ Media income $0.00
  • Marketleverage income $0.00
  • ReviewMe review income $0.00
  • Pay Per Post income $0.00
  • Privately arranged ads income $20.00

Total income for the month of July 2008: $133.07  (up 30%)

Page rank for the site from Google: 3/10  (up 1)

Page rank for site from Alexa #597268  (down)

Number of RSS Readers from Feedburner: 420 (avg)  (same)

Again, no income from a lot of the advertising, but more income is good, my goal of $10K for the year seems a pipe dream for now, but I will work on that too.

Now that I am actually making slave wages for blogging (what is the sarcasm font), I am now applying to the Microsoft affiliate program to see whether there is even more monetization of my writings possible. Did I mention that I am a mercenary type of writer? If you haven’t figured that out, hope this doesn’t surprise you.

As I have said my new job is constricting my time available to blog, so it is harder to get new and interesting stuff out, so I am relying on my backlog of posts to pick up the slack for now, and that may be my saving grace for now too. I have written a hell of a lot of stuff, and picking out the kernels of good stuff is a good thing.

So John Chow dot com posted this, but I am going to post it as well, just because it bears repeating that the Internet Porn Business is huge. Now the video in this posting is not something you should be looking at, while at work (even though most porn is viewed between 9 & 5 PM), some very interesting “liner notes” throughout the video! Good Magazine is going to be added to my RSS list just for this!

The U.S. is the major creator of Internet Smut ? Well, service industries is part of the new U.S. economy, but that is ridiculous!

So I have been attempting to get new eyes on the Financial web site, by resurrecting my Blogsoldiers account, and joining various “chain letters” on linking, but I am not too sure this will really bear (bare?) too much fruit.

Blogsoldiers is yet another site where if you “surf” the sites that are their, others will do the same for your site. When I started out about 3 years ago, I thought these sites were great for creating traffic, but at the end of it the traffic is artificial and my bet is, the number of new readers you get are about 0.1% of viewers from those type of sites.

You saw the chain posting yesterday for Blogcatalog, to help boost Technorati ratings, which is interesting, although it was more interesting to look at the HTML from the list. I copied it directly from the site in question, but then looked at the HTML and saw a _base_ref=”foo/foo” reference for every single one of the listings. I am still researching what that would do in an HREF html clause, but I suspect it would drive traffic to foo/foo, which I think is dirty pool, but that is my opinion.

Canadian Capitalist has put up a list of new Canadian Money Blogs, which I think is really good “paying it forward” by him, as he seems to be progressing well in his goals, so good on him!
