An update on  my attempt to carve out a meager income with my blogging so here is an update for December from Canadian Personal Finance Opinions :

• Adsense income $51.54 with about 5000 impressions
• Kontera income $7.84  on 4400 page impressions
• Text Link Ads income $38.09 earn with 5 ads running out of a possible 8 (text link ads)
• Performancing Ads $15.60 from 1 advertiser
• Pepper Jam Ads income $0.00
• NeverBlueAds income $0.00
• TTZ Media income $0.00
• Marketleverage income $0.00
• ReviewMe review income $0.00
• Pay Per Post income $0.00
• Privately arranged ads income $20.00

Total income for the month of July 2008: $133.07  (up 30%)

Number of RSS Readers from Feedburner: 420 (avg)  (same)

Again, no income from a lot of the advertising, but more income is good, my goal of $10K for the year seems a pipe dream for now, but I will work on that too.

I am a very audio learner, but strangely, I learn the most when I am the one talking? Please ask me to explain it, because when I am forced to talk about something, I end up learning more about what I don’t know, and usually learn more about what I do know as well.

A good example is I have been “tutoring” a new Financial Blogger who is a good friend of mine, about how to monetize your web sites and the countless years of tricks I have learned blogging (yes, it didn’t take very long), but I ended up having to think about what I have been doing, and I thought of a bunch of stuff that I hadn’t thought about for a while. This is why I need to talk with people to understand whatever I am doing.

Auditory learning should never be discounted.

So last night I received a phone call asking for me by name (not by my moniker) asking if I wanted to make money on the Internet. I was in a bit of a rush, but figured I could listen in to see what this “scam” was about.

I didn’t get the full story, because I had to leave (and hung up on the sales pitch), but whoever the middle company was, was going to set up a web site for me with ads for Dish Networks and some other dish company and then if anyone clicked on the ad AND bought a Dish subscription, I would get $125 in commission.

Sounded interesting, and if I had more time I might have kibitzed a bit more, however one question that concerned me before I heard the sales pitch was, “Do you have a valid credit card?”, WTF? I said Yes, without thinking, but did not give out any numbers, but why do they want to know that?

My guess would be that when the sales pitch was given to me, then I would have to pay for “up keep” on the “web site” they set up for me, etc.,. I was going to ask if they simply wanted me to put an ad up on my web site, however, since I didn’t have time, I never asked.

Wonder how they got my name directly? Have to watch for this one. Next time I am going to ask.

I read about this trick to drive traffic to your web site and it was brilliant in it’s simplicity. The folks at WheresGeorge.com stamped U.S. dollar bills with a stamp that looks like:

Which drives folks to go to their web site to input the serial numbers for their currency. Holy crap! As long as this isn’t illegal, which I am not completely clear on, this is BRILLIANT. You go to the site, and it does not look like a government web site, as it is cluttered nicely with Adsense Adverts all over it, BRILLIANT, did I mention that before?

There is evidently a Canadian version for the $5.00 bill called Where’s Willy, amazing! These guys are evil geniuses, hats off to them.

Not a great work for “the business” with very little money made, I’d feel ashamed to publish any numbers like the Evil John Chow might, or other much more successful “blog whores”, but suffice it to say, I think I have squandered my income on this coffee I am drinking.

I need to investigate on how to get more readership, and make a little more money. Now I did make some money on ReviewMe, so I am not complaining, well yes I am, but that is what I do, complain about how other folks make more money than me. Hey, what’s worse is you are reading me complain about it!

I have an actual free weekend ahead, which I am sure will be filled up with Gardening and family work, but I am going to do some research to see what my next logical step in figuring out how to turn my “micro” business into a “paying hobby”.

I have been accepted with NeverBlue Ads which is kind of cool. They actually called me at home to confirm that I wasn’t just some whacked out Adsense whore site, so here is another interesting way to try to Monetize over at Canadian Financial Rants.

Traffic continues to hover around 200-400 hits a day, but I am looking for the next plateau to get to, so I am open to suggestions (other than Herbal Viagara ads).

If you are just starting out and have no concept of how you are going to make money with your blog or business, you need to create an Adsense account, and get their advertising power onto your site. I am assuming you already have a Web Service provider (if you don’t have that, try blogger.com and go from there).

I started up with Adsense about 2 years ago, and I have been satisfied with the amount of money I have made, given the amount of work I have put into my Blogs.

There is an entire INDUSTRY on how Adsense works, and how to optimize your monetary intake or maximize your advertising dollar (if you take the next step and want to use Adsense to advertise your site). What you need to understand is that:

1. Adsense figures out from your web site what it thinks your web site does. This is done by the Google “Spiders” traversing around looking at keywords and deciding what type of adverts fit best on your site.
2. On the basis of where your reader is, Adsense will put geographically relevant ads up (it tries not to advertise Far East services to North Americans, for example).
3. Adsense code is javascript, so it dynamically creates the links on your web site each time it is read.
4. You make money when readers of your site “click through” and as tempting as it can be, if YOU are caught up’ing your own click stats by doing that yourself, you will be kicked out of the program very quickly.
5. You need to know what keywords make the most money for your topic, and make sure they are prominent so that Adsense profits can be plentiful. Again just do a Google Search for Adsense Keywords, and stand back.

Adsense is not the only advertiser you can associate yourself with, but they are always the first place to start, unless you don’t fit into their list of sites they like (i.e. if you are a porno site, or are doing something illegal, they will not advertise).

Start out slowly with this, you are not going to be rich like these folks, but you might earn some coffee money, and that is a good start! –C8j

Well, I have been “farting” around attempting to make some extra money blogging about finances for the past two years or so, and have marginally made a little pocket money (almost coffee money, but not quite). A lot of times I have great ideas, but they aren’t about finances, they are about how the blog site should work, or how things hang together, so I figured, I’d start a line of consciousness blog about what I have done, what I am doing, and what I am planning on doing for the blogs that I am attempting to make a little extra cash with on the side.

Why would you read this? That’s a good question, and a valid one too (I’ll get slapped for that response, I can tell), mostly I hope to use this as my notebook, so I can keep track and remember why I did some of the odd things that I have done in the past two years, and in the years ahead. Hopefully I will put some things up that help other folks who are attempting the same thing as I, and help them out. Also, hopefully I’ll make a sack of cash and then get to retire (oh that is funny every time I write it).
