Originally posted on my finance blog after a particularly vulgar weekend that I spent cleaning up hundreds of SPAM comments on my blogspot account. Spam, Spam, Spam…..

I don’t like SPAM !

No that is not my breakfast, it is what I am now continually finding as “comments” on this page. I have turned off Anonymous comments, since those are just an invitation for idiots to come and spew stupidities, but this is even worse.

Typically what happens is there is a comment like:

“… I really like your debt reduction web site, have a look at mine at FUNNY LINK…”

You go and look and it is a page with 1 entry on it and 10,000 Adsense ads, so the only thing you CAN click are the ads (not my FUNNY LINK, that is a link to the SPAM FAN CLUB!). That is just poor sportsmanship, an abuse of blogging and a pretty tacky way to make money (only in this author’s humble opinion). Yes, I have adsense ads, and yes I’d like to make money on them, but at least I create relatively relevant and new content, not just an obvious, ca$h grab!


I espouse Debt Reduction, taking control of your finances and I am now a crusader against SPAM. As a kid actually I liked “Klik” more than SPAM anyway.

OK a real posting is coming soon, but I had to get that one off my shoulder! Oh and if you click on the SPAM picture you go to the SPAM-A-LOT Broadway Show Home page.

Whatever you do when you set up your blog or web site you must be diligent pulling the weeds in your site, which is SPAM. Yes, people leave these asinine comments which usually have NOTHING to do with your post, but it includes a link to their Adsense site, which consists of two links and a thousand ad sense ads. I spent yesterday cleaning out a whole bunch.

John Chow has been running a good segment on the importance if you are using WordPress to clean out the comments and to set up your comment PHP utility so it is not easily attacked. In Blogspot, it is a lot harder to do BULK removal of crap comments, so I have to do it 1 by 1, and each 1 gets me more and more frustrated.

I wonder if folks make money on this kind of stuff? They must, given the proliferation of these crappy comments on my site at least.

Yes, there are a couple of ways to tell whether you are being read or not (and we’ll delve into that later), but one of the most tangible ones is through comments. If people are leaving comments about your posts you know that:

  1. Someone IS reading this, not just your Mom or Dad
  2. Someone cares enough about what you have written to comment on it
  3. You are heading in the right direction

Now I must caution that in the early days, if you are not careful you will get Comment SPAM. SPAM in e-mail is annoying, but SPAM in your comments is downright irritating, and must be obliterated. You can stop this by diligently checking your comments, or by setting up that your comments must be read by YOU before they are allowed on your site, which is a good idea too.

The other thing to do is read other sites and comment there, because that sometimes brings folks over to check out what you are saying as well. Now don’t be a knob about it, and just make comments like, “… come see my new great site at spam.spam.spam.spam.com …”, or I will come over and kick you!
