How to Add Amazon Associates Ads to Your WordPress Blog {Part 2}

Yesterday I showed what you need to do to include an Amazon Associates text link advertising link into your WordPress article, and you ended up with this: Hellboy (Special Edition, 2 discs)

What if you want some spiffy pictures instead (like the one on the side here)?. This article will outline the obtuse steps that you need to take to do this.

Remember the fancy IFRAME version of the advertising from Amazon is completely out, because WordPress thinks it is a security issue, so you can’t do that.

The steps you need to take are like before:

Log in to your Amazon Associates account
Select Build Link/Widgets
Select Classic Links
Select Product Links
In the Example I had it search DVD for Hellboy
This time select IMAGE ONLY for your link (to make it look like the picture on this page).
You highlight the HTML like before and copy it over to your WordPress page as usual:

However, now you have a problem, the picture reference in the first IMG tag (src=”51ksuxW%2BPcL._SL160_.jpg” mce_src=”51ksuxW%2BPcL._SL160_.jpg”) is relative to the Amazon web page, and you must now replace that with a fully instantiated web address
To find out the images real address, right click on the same page and choose “Copy Image Location” and copy it into the above code, so now it looks like:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ksuxW%2BPcL._SL160_.jpg” mce_src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ksuxW%2BPcL._SL160_.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”Hell Boy” align=”left” />
Problem solved (kind of), I’d rather have the slick IFRAME code work, but the picture works for me too.

Hope this helps you get more Amazon Associates sales, it hasn’t worked for me much, but you never know what might happen soon.

Procrastination for Template Changes

So I decided to change from the old template formats in blogspot on my family’s blog, just to try it out and see just how arduous that task could be, it actually wasn’t too bad, since I didn’t really have a lot of “crap” in my template (the most complicated thing was a nice “visual calendar” which showed my son’s age in months). I had to keep remembering that I didn’t have to use the existing widgets, I could just use the HTML widget and “dump” all of my stuff in there instead and it seems to have worked not too shabbily. I saved my old template on line and on my computer just in case I had forgotten things, because I always miss something the first time.

I then figured I’d back up my Finance Site’s template, which is what I am procrastinating about changing (the format and the style), and thought, “Man this thing is HUGE”. I started sifting through there and found a monstrous piece of Javascript code that seemed to do nothing at all, so I ripped that out for now. I believe it was supposed to be outputting financial news headlines, but I think the service DIED and no one told me! Oh well, there is about 75 lines of javascript that won’t get downloaded each time you go to my site!
